And The Time Magazine's Person of the Year 2016 is... Donald Trump!

Time magazine has named US President-elect Donald Trump Person of the Year, citing the upheaval in American politics brought about by the election campaign and victory of the New York businessman.

“When have we ever seen a single individual who has so defied expectations, broken the rules, violated norms, beaten not one but two political parties on the way to winning an election that he entered with 100-1 odds against him?” editor-in-chief of Time Nancy Gibbs said. “I don’t think we have ever seen one person operating in such an unconventional way have an impact on the events of the year quite like this.”

“It’s hard to measure the scale of his disruption … For reminding America that demagoguery feeds on despair and that truth is only as powerful as the trust in those who speak it, for empowering a hidden electorate by mainstreaming its furies and live-streaming its fears, and for framing tomorrow’s political culture by demolishing yesterday’s, Donald Trump is Time’s 2016 person of the year.”

The cover of the magazine showed a picture of Mr Trump with the words "President of the Divided States of America".

In an interview accompanying the cover, Trump says he does not believe Russia interfered in the election, defends his claim of widespread illegal voting, and insists that despite his wealth he represents “the workers of the world”, who “love me”.

While there are many onspiracy theories surrounding this announcement, one theory which was seized upon by a number of media organizations, suggested the M in the word TIME on the cover had been deliberately positioned above the president-elect's head so as to create a pair of devil-like horns.

Others pointed to the decision to photograph Mr Trump seated in an angled armchair, suggesting it was a subtle throwback to the April 1941 cover, which pictured Adolf Hitler in a similar position.

Last year’s pick was the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, and the sitting president, Barack Obama, appeared both as president-elect in 2008 and after securing a second term in 2012.
