WhatsApp To End BlackBerry, Nokia OS Support

Popular mobile messaging service WhatsApp has announced that it will let go of BlackBerry and those Nokia's Symbian operating system as its supported platforms by the end of 2016.

In a statement released this weekend, WhatsApp announced that it will be ending support for their app on BlackBerry 10, BBOS, Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Android 2.1, Android 2.2 and Windows Phone 7.1.

“While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future. This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp”, it said.

Blackberry usage has been declining for the better part of the last decade and it makes for companies to not invest in the platform especially given that BlackBerry themselves have shifted to Android now. For those who are still using devices running above platforms, its time for an upgrade.

New Microsoft Lumia version users will also continue to enjoy the mobile messaging service.
