‘Star Wars: Force Awakens’ Breaks Records With $53 Million China Debut

Global blockbuster movie “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” shattered a record-breaking $53 million after debuting in China on Saturday, according to studio estimates.

According to Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis, for many Chinese moviegoers, “The Force Awakens” is “the first ‘Star Wars’ film they’ve ever seen.”

The seventh installment in the iconic sci-fi series surpassed the $760.5 million mark previously set by Avatar in a record-breaking 20 days of release, according to early box office numbers.

In North America, it has become the top-earning film of all time and has also crossed its $800 million mark at the international box office on Wednesday, according Disney.

The company invested heavily in “Star Wars,” investing more than $4 billion in 2012 for rights to Lucasfilm, the company behind the franchise.
