Toronto to bid for 2024 Olympics

Toronto has joined Paris, Rome, Boston, Budapest and Hamburg in bidding for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Marcel Aubut, president of the Canadian Olympic Committee, said Friday that he will “absolutely lead and advocate with the whole power of my office that Toronto becomes the host city for 2024 Olympic Games.”

The 1976 Games were held in the Canadian city of Montreal, while Vancouver (2010) and Calgary (1988) hosted winter Games.

Toronto lost bids for the 1996 Games held in Atlanta and 2008 Games, which went to Beijing. The city has been staging the Pan Am Games, which ended on Sunday.

Hopeful cities interested in landing the 2024 Games have a September 15 deadline to submit their letter of application to the International Olympic Committee. The host city of the 2024 Summer Olympics will be elected in the summer of 2017 in Lima, Peru.
