Rome's 2024 Olympic bid confirmed

The Italian government confirmed that Rome will bid for hosting the 2024 Olympics.

The Italian capital, which last held the summer Games in 1960, shelved plans to bid for the 2020 event two years ago due to concerns over costs in crisis-hit Italy.

“We are confident that we can make it,” explained Prime Minister Matteo Renzi yesterday, December 15, announcing the bid during an event at the Italian National Olympic Committee.

“We are running to win, not just to take part #italy2024,” Renzi later tweeted. Rome is now the first candidate city to throw its hat in the ring for the 2024 Summer Games. Once again Italy is trying to get the Olympics; two years ago, former PM Mario Monti stopped Rome's bid for the 2020 Olympics by refusing to sign a necessary guarantee letter.

The 2020 Olympics were eventually awarded to Tokyo.
