The strategic role of youth in the 21st century leadership, development and nation building took the front burner at the 5th New Era Foundation’s Council of One Day Governors (CODG) reunion luncheon which held in Lagos recently.
At the program, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, Chief Dr Molade Okoya-Thomas and other top dignitaries took turns to encourage, inspire and challenge the youths to take their rightful place in the scheme of things.
In her own remarks, Mrs Tinubu, President of the New Era Foundation and a special guest urged the Nigerian youth to brace up and channel their energy positively towards supporting causes that can influence the future of the nation.
The former Lagos State first lady noted that the youth has a major role to play in leadership and development and urged them to embrace both formal and informal education to equip them appropriately for the mission ahead. She added that the 21st is a knowledge driven economy and balanced education is the preferred currency.
The program tagged “Today’s model, Tomorrow’s future” was designed to reunite past winners of the New Era Spelling Bee also known as CODG and offer them a platform as youth ambassadors to interact with and learn from successful and eminent personalities, business captains and political leaders.
Mrs Tinubu expressed joy over “New Era Foundation’s spirited efforts over the years to equip and impact the young people positively with various meaningful programmes and trainings, including overseas trips, competitions and its flagship youth camp.”
The foundation is helping a great deal to expose the youth to different areas of life and other cultures to help broaden their knowledge, widen their horizon and impact them positively. I commend the team, our sponsors, our partners including the Lagos State Ministry of Education and Lagos Deep Offshore Logistics Base (LADOL), board and candidates for a great and fulfilling year, said Tinubu.
“I am particularly excited over the joy, inspiration and equipping that the opening of the New Era Youth Camp (NEYOCA) is providing to young people. Seeing the evident excitement of these kids as they share great, heart moving testimonies about their NEYOCA experience truly reinforces my conviction to forge ahead with the dream of delivering world class youth development centres in Nigeria, ” she added.
Also speaking at the event, Mr Yemi Osilaja, Executive Director, New Era foundation, expressed optimism over the achievements of the last eleven years of operation and expressed the team’s resolve to take things higher.
Osilaja remarked that the year 2013 did not only witnessed encouraging growth but busted with youth and energy for the foundation.
“Our commitment to the vision for New Era foundation to be a formidable and sustainable enterprise for social transformation in youth development, environmental health and women empowerment remains solid. A lot of resources have already gone into developing the camp and much more is still needed towards reaching our goal of functional resource centres that are ideal for all youth. We want to be at the forefront of a campaign that helps the youth take command of their future.” he added.
The event was well attended by notable personalities including business captains and politicians who trooped out en masse to motivate the youth. Some of the guests included Lagos State First Lady, Mrs Abimbola Fashola, Dr Leke Pitan, 2 times commissioner in Lagos, Chief Dr Molade Okoya-Thomas, Mrs Oprah Benson, Lagos Education commissioner, Barrister Olayinka Oladunjoye, Mrs Sarah Sosan, Former Lagos Deputy Governor, Dr Amy Jadesimi, Managing Director, LADOL, Senator Babafemi Ojodu, Hon Wahab Alawiye-King, Hon Tunde Ibrahim and many other dignitaries.
