How Twitter Is Creating A Social World For Nigerian Celebrities

Global Village is a term closely associated with Marshall McLuhan, popularized in his books The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man (1962) and Understanding Media (1964). McLuhan described how the globe has been contracted into a village by electric technology and the instantaneous movement of information from every quarter to every point at the same time.

Marshall McLuhan predicted the Internet as an "extension of consciousness" in The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man thirty years before its commercialization.

According to him, the enhanced "electric speed in bringing all social and political functions together in a sudden implosion has heightened human awareness of responsibility to an intense degree." Increased speed of communication and the ability of people to read about, spread, and react to global news quickly, forces us to become more involved with one another from various social groups and countries around the world and to be more aware of our global responsibilities.

While the market continues to show strong growth in volume and value sales, milk consumption in Nigeria still remains low in per capita terms, according to a research report recently released by Euromonitor International on its website.

The report revealed that advertising, discounting and promotional sales and corporate social responsibility campaigns such as Peak Milk’s “drink milk everyday” campaign, are helping to spur growth. The variety of goods in drinking milk products is also increasing. Producers are introducing new flavours to cater for consumer demand for products that combine nutrition with newer tastes, fruit flavours are particularly popular.

The shift of emphasis to smaller packaging units by virtually all manufacturers also helped boost sales among poor and price sensitive consumers, who previously considered drinking milk products as a luxury.

On competitive landscape, "the research revealed that Promasidor leads the market, in 2013 and the company is expected to hold 22% of retail value sales of drinking milk products. Currently, an estimated 40% of the megacity's waste is collected and taken to massive rubbish dumps, where scavengers pick through it for scrap and salvage to sell.

But a new scheme is hoping to change people's attitude towards rubbish, and their immediate environment by providing a material incentive to recycle plastic bottles, bags and tin cans.

Brazil asks Adidas to stop selling 'sexualised' World Cup T-shirts

World Cup sponsor and official ball provider Adidas has agreed to stop selling two T-shirts after complaints from Brazil's tourism board about their sexual innuendos.

According to Reuters, the country's tourism board objected to the shirts because "they encourage sexual tourism" — a problem Brazil fears will worsen exponentially with hundreds of thousands of visitors in the country during the World Cup this summer.

One shirt shows a bikini-clad woman with open arms on a sunny Rio de Janeiro beach under the words "Looking to Score". The other has an "I love Brazil" heart resembling the upside-down buttocks of a woman wearing a thong. The designs touched a nerve in Brazil, where people often complain about foreign stereotypes of Brazilian sensuality. The government is campaigning aggressively to shed the country's reputation as a destination for sex tourism.

Dilma Rousseff – Brazil's first female president – said her government would crack down on sex tourism and the exploitation of children during the ccompetition, which is expected to draw 600,000 foreign fans. "Brazil is happy to receive tourists for the World Cup, but it is also ready to combat sex tourism," she said in a burst of Twitter messages that included a hotline number to report cases of sexual exploitation.m" of sexual predators.

Portuguese designer Felipe Oliveira Baptista has announced that he is suspending his ready-to-wear line for an undetermined amount of time. The designer has also canceled his fall 2014 runway show, which was scheduled for Wednesday.

"Séverine and I decided to take time off to think about the future of our collaboration and brand and reevaluate its structure and existence," Baptista told WWD.

"We will most likely venture into another design or creative field. We would like to thank everyone who has supported and has worked with us over these extremely rich and fantastic 10 years. It is a well-thought-out and positive decision. It's the end of a chapter, not the book."
