Google Apps: Move to ‘the cloud’, save costs on the ground

When times get tough, focusing on your core business is imperative. Cutting bottom-line costs to the business along with making operations run as efficiently and effectively as possible is one of the first steps towards shoring up your defences. In these tough economic times, ask any company if they could save money a year per employee and most likely they'd jump at the chance.

IT can be a big upfront cost and having to manage it on a daily basis can increase spend and distract you even further from your core focus - making money. Until now.

The business approach to IT is being redefined by the Internet. Email, documents, calendars and other business communication tools are increasingly being delivered and hosted online via a trend known as ‘cloud computing’. Cloud computing is a simple concept: applications and data are delivered over the Internet via a third party. It's a transformational, disruptive technology which is having a big impact on the way the world of IT works and the way businesses run IT.

Cloud computing has many key benefits, but two stand out – firstly, cost savings. Once you’re hooked up to the web, the cost of buying licenses, purchasing servers and maintaining them is reduced because it’s possible to effectively ‘rent’ business applications from a third party. From a budget perspective, it brings predictable costs for IT and dramatically reduces spend on traditional desktop software.

According to Business News reports, the move is aimed at phasing out analogue technologies in line with the Federal Government’s digitisation agenda.

"When the digital switchover happens, there won’t be importation of analogue sets, that is, the second-hand  or Tokunbo  TVs and analogue transmitters anymore. Certain TV sets will not work again.

People using digitally-enabled sets with digital tuners may not need decoders because signals can be picked from the air; but antennas will be needed”, the report quoted Director-General, NBC, Mr. Emeka Mba as saying.

Ribena in partnership with Tetra Pak West Africa recently handed over 80 desk and chair units made from recycled empty packs of Ribena to the LOTS Foundation in Dustbin Estate in Ajegunle area of Lagos State.  This was done as they concluded the “Drink it, Flatten it and Bin it” recycling campaign with twenty schools in Lagos State.  The Foundation in turn handed the donated furniture over to different primary schools in the dumpsite area.

Speaking at the handover event, Mr Olawale Akanbi of GlaxoSmithKline, makers of Ribena, said, “The recycle project with primary school children has proven a worthy effort for us as an organisation whose corporate vision is to help people everywhere, do more, feel better and live longer. The Ribena Tetra Pak “Drink it, Flatten it and Bin it” recycling campaign, was strategically executed through children in select primary schools in Lagos State. According to the Ribena Brand Manager, “The project which has a ‘catch them young’ undertone, was designed to help children learn and imbibe the simple habit of taking care of the environment by disposing their waste items properly and also by turning their waste into useful items through recycling. We believe the lessons from the project will stay with the children as they grow into adults.”
