P&G Inaugurates 6th Orphanage Resource Centre in Nigeria

Leading consumer goods company, Procter and Gamble Nigeria Limited (P&G), in partnership with ‘Sponsor a Child,’ a non-governmental organization, recently inaugurated a resource centre at Bema Homes, Lugbe, Abuja under its ‘Building Futures’ programme.

In showing appreciation, Mrs. Benedicta Jereke, the Founder of Bema Homes said the residents of the home are very grateful to P&G and ‘Sponsor a Child’ for choosing their home to be one of the beneficiaries of the Building Futures project.
“I feel like a new born baby because it is not easy to have text books for the children. Without textbooks, the children cannot learn well said Mrs. Jereke.  Seeing this, I am highly relieved and I pray that God will bless ‘Procter and Gamble’ and ‘Sponsor a child’ abundantly. I assure you that it will be well managed and judiciously put into good use with constant maintenance culture to ensure its durability”.

Representatives from the Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs, the Federal Ministry of Education, the FCT Universal Basic Education Board amongst others were present at the commissioning event. The ‘Resource center (learn and play center)’ donated to the orphanage comprises a well equipped, conducive study space furnished with computers, books and learning materials for children ranging from preschool to secondary school ages. The resource center also includes an outdoor play area for the orphanage. At the event, five other orphanages and children’s homes received whole year supplies of Pampers diapers, Ariel detergent and PUR purifier of water.

Speaking at the event, P&G’s Corporate Public Relations Manager , Olatomiwa Akande, reiterated the company’s commitment to improving the lives of children in need in Nigeria.

“We believe that qualitative education is a critical requirement for every child. This ‘learn and play’ center is our contribution to help position these special children on the path to success in life”, Miss Akande said.
While delivering her speech at the event, Ms. Olatoun Williams, Coordinator of the ‘Sponsor a Child,’ NGO said the resource centre was created to provide vulnerable kids with educational materials. According to her, Bema Resource Centre is the 6th in a line of such resource centers which have been donated to orphanages and community schools around the country by ‘Building Futures’ since its inception in 2009.
